Well, I just candled my eggs in the bator. They are seramas as well as some that I am hatching for my cousin. Well, they all have detached air cells . Two are growing though (1 serama and 1 mystery egg). But, I don't hold out hope for them because I have never had a chick hatch from an egg with a detached air cell. You know what? These eggs were packed the "best" way (as some would say), with bubble wrap and lots of shipping peanuts. This is the 3rd time (that I can think of and remember how they were packed) that I received eggs with the majority of the eggs having detached air cells. Twice, the eggs have been individually wrapped in bubble wrap and double boxed with shipping peanuts and once, the eggs were wrapped in bubble wrap and packed in a single box with peanuts. I would really like to know if the bubble wrap is causing this or is it just coincidence? I have heard some people say that it is the x-ray machines that are used. By the way, when I have received eggs like this, there has been none broke and the boxes were in perfect condition. HMMMM.

I just got some salmon faverolles bantam eggs last Thursday, and they look to have all their air cells detached. This is a first for me with shipped eggs. I have had about 7 shipments this year, and all had good air cells. These came packaged in a styrofoam egg carton and shredded newspaper as packaging. None were broken. I'm very sad, as I have been looking for this breed of bantam for some time. I think I will email the breeder and see if I can get another set.

Were the boxes marked Eggs? This is why I like to mark mine eggs so they will know what is in the package.

Yep, mine had "FRAGILE-HATCHING EGGS" written all over the box.
It definitely wasn't the shippers fault. I believe that she did everything that she could possibly do. It was in the postal services hands.

Ditto for mine. Hatching eggs was written on the top and side.

Hello everyone, I just heard from a lady in IL that I shipped a dozen eggs to and she said she candled them and all 12 are developing so far, :-) I think a lot has to do with how far the eggs have to travel. We live in NY and only the state of Ohio is between us so I think that is why they all made it. Earlyer this spring I got a dozen eggs shipped to me in NY from Iowa and all of them had detached air cells but luckly 2 HATCHED and are now 7 weeks old and doing good. I have another dozen eggs that is on its way from down south and we are praying they make it, if I only end up with a couple chicks out of it I will be VERY happy. :-)

These eggs that I got came from Tennessee to Louisiana. A while back, I received some shipped eggs that traveled about 300 miles and almost all of them had detached air cells and the box was totally undamaged. There must be something that is causing this damage when they are in the hands of the postal service. I have my automatic waterer coming in a few days. I think that I am going to ask our postal carrier if she knows what the problem might be. By the way, I just tried to shake one of my chicken eggs, from the refrigerator, up really violently and it looks perfectly normal. This is going to drive me crazy until I find this out . Mellie, good luck with your eggs. Keep us posted.

You could be right about the bubble wrap. I have never been a big fan of bubble wrap. Seems to me in the summer it would cause the eggs to sweat and that would not be good for them.

Serama eggs don't ship well. I had six shipped to me, but 3 were broken, and the other 3 didn't hatch. The breeder replaced the eggs with 4 more to make up for the loss, and none of those hatched. And just because Anthony of Six Feathers Seramas is really nice, he sent me 6 more that are in the bator right now. I did pay for shipping but not for the new sets of eggs. Here's his website if anyone is interested. www.seramas.com

I hope you get some of them to hatch, I thought haveing some of the little guys would be great fun, we only raise silkies and we spoil them rotten, they are great fun. If I had a extra place for them I would get some. I do have the space and I could get another mini barn delivered but I would have to save up for it. maybe I will work on that for next year. :-) We also have 2 bantam ducks and they are a blast. Well, I just candled again and the chicks are still growing in the eggs . I haven't turned the eggs as much as normal, so maybe that is helping. I just didn't want to shake them up any more than necessary. They are due on May 25th, so I will just have to wait and see. If they can hatch, the Brinsea will do it. I emailed the seller to ask her what the mystery egg might be since these were all bantam eggs and seramas and this egg is huge, but she never answered my email . I guess that she thought that I might ask for some more since these had detached air cells, but I know the risks that you take with shipping. I just wanted to know what I had gotten. I guess that it will be a surprise. Oh well, I love surprises.

Well, I had two eggs hatch. And, one of the ones to hatch was one that I thought had died in the shell early on! The one serama egg didn't hatch. It must have died because of the detached air cell. I did have the one large egg hatch and I still don't know what breed it is. It is a very dark color with dark legs and a single comb. I am thinking that it is a black star . Not exactly one of the breeds that I was hoping for. The other that hatched was a jap. This one had a detached air cell and air bubbles in the egg. It also hadn't moved in the shell when I candled. This is the first egg that I have had hatch with detached air cell. I am glad that I hadn't removed it when I candled.
