Yesterday, I caught the kids trying to make an incubator. They had taken a box and put a hand warmer in there and put a silkie eggs from our silkies on top of the hand warmer. When I picked the egg up, it felt about as warm as an egg in the incubator. But, I don't think that the hand warmer had heated up totally. The egg would have been fried. Not to mention, if it did work, it would cost us a fortune in hand warmers lol. So, I gave them my little dome incubator and they set it up and put 3 eggs in there (one for each of them). This is going to be their project. The only thing that I am going to do is turn the eggs while they are at school. Today, they are making a chart of when to turn and candle. I doubt if these will hatch, seeing as how these little bators do not keep temps very good and the silkies just started laying. But, the bator has kept a perfect 100 degrees since the fixed it up yesterday afternoon, so you never know. They wanted to use the Brinsea, but I thought that they would learn more this way. Here is their set up:

Thanks Anna! Here is the picture that we took while candling. You can see the veins and baby. The kids were sooooo excited. The circle that you see on the egg is the mark that they made to remember which way to turn the eggs.

WOW! That is a nice picture of a fertile egg. How old were the eggs when you candled them?

This one was about 4 days into the incubation. I had tried to take a picture of the veins the day before, but I couldn't get a clear picture. So, the next day we tried to take the picture by laying the egg on the carpet and taking the picture that way with the flash turned off. I am glad that we did it the next day because you could see a lot more. Today is day 7. I am contemplating whether or not to candle again so soon. I don't like to candle too much, but before too long, you won't be able to see the baby very well.

Well, one of the eggs in this little incubator is rocking and cheeping! I can't believe that we may get a hatch out of this cheap thing LOL. I really hope that all three eggs hatch or the kids will be fighting lol. I guess that I shouldn't have let them put their names on their egg. Now, they will know whose hatches and whose doesn't. Luckily, all three chicks were still moving in the eggs three days ago, so maybe all will hatch. I will keep everyone updated on the progress.

Nope, I don't have any others that will be hatching soon. The next eggs to hatch will be some from Lydia's eggs that will hatch in a couple of weeks. But, we all sat down and had a talk about what might and might not hatch. They were o.k. with it. I think what got them was that I told them whose ever's chick hatches, will be totally responsible for it. Which, includes cleaning out the brooder. They help me feed the chickens every day, but cleaning the brooders is totally different. Their exact words were "YUCK!" But, this was their idea and they will do their share. At least at first LOL.
By the way, my little girls chick has pipped the shell. The other two are still rocking. If they only have one hatch, I would want it to be hers. She really doesn't understand that it is "her" egg, so she would gladly share.

Well, there are two that have pipped now. The kids are so excited. My oldest son's egg has not pipped, but it did shake some, but not lately . He said that he wished that his would hatch, but it was o.k. if it didn't. He was just glad that all of their work was paying off, even if his doesn't hatch. He is so sweet. I will keep yall updated on the progress and hopefully have some pictures to show tomorrow.

They had a hatch! And, they are asleep. They have school tomorrow and my oldest has a big test, so I didn't wake them up. Here is the first one hatching And, here it is out of the shell. I had to remove the shell immediately. There just wasn't enough room in that little bator.

The hatch is over. The kids had 2 hatch out of the 3, which is really good for those little bators. My oldest son's didn't hatch, but we have a silkie that is sitting on one egg and he is going to take that chick if it hatches. It is due in a week. We are going to candle later today to see if it is fertile and has a chick growing. If not, I will stick some nankin eggs in the bator and let him try again by himself. He is o.k. with all of this. I will get pictures out later.
