I finally broke down and bought an incubator. One of my hens decided that she was going to start sitting in December and due to the weather nothing hatched well she was so broody that we took some eggs and put them in and they are due (2) on Jan 26 and (2) Feb. 1st and they are coming along very well. We candled last night and all eggs are progressing. Does anyone know if when they start pipping if I bring the hen in will she take on the role as mom or is that a bad idea. Thanks!!!!

I have heard of people doing that with both good and bad results. I have never tried it myself. If I were to try that, I would trade out eggs several days before they were due to hatch. So, what kind of incubator did you get? I have had the chick fever for a while now. I guess there is only one thing that can cure that illness .

me me I just set a hen on 7 eggs this morning lol I can't wait to see if they'll hatch these are shipped eggs so in 3 weeks I should have peeps.
as for your question with most of my girls when they go broody I can usally give them chicks, lol once I had a silkie that hatched one chick(she was in here with me)I had also hatched out 11 chicks in the incubater, that silly hen would have a fit if she heard the babies peeping so I thought what the heck I gave them to her, lol I have never seen a hen stuff them babies under her so darn fast lol she was to funny to watchthough I have never done it you can give her the eggs before they hatch, put them under her at night so that there will be a better chance of the hen staying on them and make sure that she does

After I done my homework on the incubators and realizing that most of the ones that you can get locally are all styrofoam and not worth the 50.00 they cost and that not including the egg turner (39.99). I found this one called the Brinsea Octagon 20 with auto egg turner for 295.00. Which is an awsome incubator I would tell anyone if you are going to get one this would be the one. It does not take up much space and is very reliable. It has a digital thermometer and a turbo fan to circulate the air and help with the humidity. Which is a major deal I have found out. But I love it and it is not made of styrofoam it is hard heavy plastic with a clear plastic top. You can go to the company web site and see them they have alot to choose from but I did not get mine directly from the company they were more expensive. Thank you for the advice on putting the eggs under the hen. I will give that a try and see what happens I will let everyone know when they begin to hatch and I will try to figure out how to post pictures !!!

I also have the Brinsea 20. LOVE IT! I have had many 100% hatches. I have had mine for a year and don't think that I have ever adjusted the thermostat. It is very stable.

You are right very stable. The only time i have adjusted the temp was when we first set it up and that was it. What temp do you have yours set at? I know it is in celsius.

TEXTHi everyone, Yes we hatched out 3 chicks on new years day, they are in the living room, :-) With the weather being so cold in the north I have no idea hwo long they will be in the house, We also have 2 black silkie eggs in the incubater now that I got off of a friend they have 13 more days to go, and I gave my friend 3 blue silkie eggs to put in her incubator yesterday, so it looks like we will have plenty of chicks in the house all winter.
:-) WHAT FUN!!! Mellie

evanthia, I set my Brinsea set on 37.8 celcius, which is 99.5 fahrenheit on my digital thermometer.
Mellie, sounds like my house last winter. Dh finally said "no more chicks in the house!" We now have a room on the back of our carport that I plan on putting the chicks in. Luckily, down here, our winters aren't bad. It is around 70 outside right now. But it is suppose to get down to 32 tonight! BRRR! I know that is like summertime to a lot of you guys, but down here, we aren't use to it, so it is especially cold.

Hey just wanted to update everyone on my eggs that were in the incubator. Well sorry to say that only 1 has hatched and the others did not make it we think that something was wrong with them. But the one that did hatch at this point is doing ok it is weak but eating and drinking but not up on its feet yet. Hopefully it will happen somethime tonight. I will try to get the pictures loaded onto the website so everyone can see.
